About
FLX started in 2022 as a group of area friends who wanted to organize awesome square dances in the wake of COVID-19. In the last three years, we've put together many local square dances and had a lot of fun doing it. We will continue putting on dances as long as people keep showing up and wanting to dance.
About squares
The dances are traditional and have been passed down from caller to caller for over a century. They are partnered, not-necessarily-gendered dances in groups of 4 couples (that's what makes it a "square"). The caller will teach the dance before the music starts, so no experience is necessary to participate. It's not about being "good" at the dances per se, it's maybe more about the joy of participating with friends. So if you're getting the urge to dance, but are maybe not sure if you know what you're doing exactly, that's quite alright--please join us!
About the music
The music is traditional as well, with string bands (typically fiddle, guitar, banjo, and bass) playing fiddle tunes that, like the dances, have been passed aurally from musician to musician. We generally refer to this music as "old time".
